Nothing much was ever expected of Specter. He was an only child and was doted on by his parents. Specter seemed to have a flair for telling and writing stories, so they never thought he'd turn out to be anything besides an author. He was a shy little colt, barely speaking up in his classes and with few friends.

One night, while his class was out on a camping field trip, Specter earned his cutie mark while telling a ghost story over the campfire. Everyone assumed that he was destined to write and tell horror stories, but something else had earned Specter his mark. In the midst of telling his story, he saw his first ghost, a melancholy filly who had vanished from her house nearly ten years ago. For the rest of the night, Specter tried in vain to get his classmates to see the filly, unsure of why only he noticed her. The teacher notified Specter's parents of his odd behavior. Specter, sure his parents would believe him, asked them if they could see the strange filly that had followed him home. Frightened about his mental stability, they had him checked into a secluded mental asylum.

Specter still lives in the asylum, having now wisened up to the fact that he was seeing ghosts. He has only caught glimpses of the outside world changing through his tiny little window and heavily-supervised field trips. However, he is slowly biding his time, waiting for the day when he can leave -or escape, if he must- to find out what happened to the little filly.

Comet Tail was a determined young filly with a passion for astronomy, brought about when she saw a comet for the first time. After beginning her parents for a telescope and star chart, Comet Tail earned her cutie mark. She was intensely engaged in her passions, and always gave her all whenever she could.

However, one night, her life took an unexpected turn. Comet Tail disappeared, and the reason why was never determined. Was she kidnapped? Did she run away? No one found out, and Comet Tail can't remember anything about her death. She wandered for years, utterly confused, before running into Specter one night. When she realized he could see her, she refused to leave him, not wanting to lose the only pony who could help her. She was horrified that Specter was institutionalized because of her and almost ran away in shame, until Specter asked her to stay, determined to find out what happened to her.

Comet Tail stays by Specter's side for the most part, occasionally leaving the asylum to find some clues about her death on her own. She is forever torn on whether to stay with Specter or leave him. If she stays, he continues to acknowledge that he sees her and fuels the psuedo-psychological image that got him hospitalized in the first place, but she's worried that her departure might actually make Specter go insane.
